Setting the Standard for Fibers Worldwide

Fiber Measurement Conversions

Below is information about converting units of measure commonly used in the fiber industry.

What is denier, or dpf?

Because of the nature of fiber extrusion, there is always some fluctuation in the diameter of the filaments.  Fiber manufacturers use the measurement of denier (the weight in grams of 9000 meters of yarn) to define the diameter.  The diameter of the yarn will fluctuate over this 9000 meters, so by weighing it and considering the density of the polymer, they are able to determine the average diameter.

Multifilament yarn is made up of numerous filaments. The denier of the yarn divided by its number of filaments is the denier per filament (dpf).

Converting Denier per Filament / Diameter in Microns

The conversion from dpf to microns will vary depending upon the density of the fiber in question.  To convert dpf to microns:
– Look up the density of the fiber in g/cm3
– Calculate dpf divided by density
– Calculate the square root of the resulting number
– Multiply the square root by 11.89

Converting Denier per Filament / Decitex

Decitex = denier per filament divided by 0.9
Denier per filament = decitex multiplied by 0.9

Converting Measurements of Tenacity

cN/dtex = g/den divided by 1.1325
cN/tex = g/den divided by 0.11325
g/dtex = g/den multiplied by 0.9
g/tex = g/den multiplied by 9

Converting Millimeters / Inches
